Wolf Pole - Sitka National
The origin and meaning of this pole are unclear. The original was collected from Prince of Wales Island in 1903. This replica was carved by Reggie Peterson in 1982.
The top figure is probably the Village Watchman or perhaps the pole’s owner. Below him is a wolf, recognizable by its pointed ears and protruding tongue. A salmon is at the bottom of the pole. Some say the wolf and salmon represent clan crest symbols but others say the salmon is a sockeye and symbolizes a legend of a boy who was captured by the Dog Salmon people.
