Sleeping Totem in Kitwanga
Kitwanga is a small Gitxsan village on the Skeena River in northern British Columbia. This photo was taken in 1996. My understanding is that First Nations people believe fallen totem poles should not be cut up and used as firewood, but should be allowed to return to earth where they have fallen. However, when I returned to this spot in 2013, this pole was no longer there.
