Thunderbird and Whale
The mythical thunderbird is a huge creature who swoops down from the sky to capture a surfacing whale in his huge talons then flies off to a mountaintop to eat it. His beating wings produce thunder and lightning flashes from his eyes.
The original of this Haida mortuary pole was from the Village of Klukwan, Prince of Wales Island. It was first copied for Totem Bight by John Wallace as part of the CCC restoration project in the 1930s. This replica was carved by Nathan Jackson in 1990. The photo was taken late one evening in September 1993.
